A ute towing a trailer has narrowly avoided a head-on crash with a road train while overtaking a caravanner on a stretch of the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory.
The heart-stopping action was recorded on the dash cam of the “fully loaded triple road train” and posted on the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page earlier this week, where it has already been watched 392,000 times.
The video shows the racing team driver, who was returning from the Supercars event at Darwin, over-taking a 4WD vehicle also towing a caravan, as the truck speeds towards them.
Both the truck and caravanner are forced off the road as the racing team rig squeezes between the two to get back into the left lane, narrowly avoiding contact as the truck driver frantically brakes and honks his horn.
Andrew Fishtail Fisher from the Jesus Racing Team posted an apology online after the event for “our driver making a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre”.
“Our driver made a stupid decision, he was waved past by the guy in the caravan in front, he pulled out and instead of hitting the brakes and pulling back in he misjudged the situation,” he said.
“He is very thankful to the truck driver and we have endeavoured to contact him to both thank him for his great work at the wheel and to apologise for the incident.”
“We agree this is indeed a dreadful example of poor decision making, that having been said we are also trying to support the guy as well as he is feeling pretty dreadful… he is very regretful of his misjudgement.”
Not surprisingly the Facebook video has generated more than 1000 comments, with some calling for the footage to be handed over to police.
