An original piece of Australian camping history in the form of an unrestored Franklin campervan built on a 1978 Bedford CF cab/chassis is up for grabs at Shannons Timed Online Winter Auction from June 8-15.
Offered with no reserve and expected to bring $15,000-$20,000, the campervan is fitted with a water tank, hot water heater, an external shower, a 9kg gas bottle and twin petrol tanks.
While inside it comes complete with fridge, sink and stove, plus a dinette and additional seating/bed.
Other notable features include two batteries, 12-volt and 240-volt power and lights, fly-screens on all windows, a JVC stereo and a CB radio, plus a roof vent and air conditioning (not currently working) in the cab.

Externally, the camper is fitted with a bull bar, two spare wheels, a pull-out awning and six new chrome wheel rings.
Based on the popular Bedford CF light commercial platform, the campervan is fitted with a 173-cid ‘red’ Holden engine and three-speed automatic transmission.
Its paint appears to be original, while the curtains and seat covers are all in good condition, although the driver’s seat has been replaced with something more modern.
In its present condition, it could prove a very social way to tour Australia during these COVID times. Franklin is one of the oldest names in Australian caravanning, making it an instant conversation starter.

Many Aussies also have fond memories of buying an ice cream from a brightly coloured Bedford van, and they also proved popular here during the custom craze of the 1970s until production ceased in 1987.
However, as few survive on Australian roads today, they're fast becoming a collector item.
The 40-plus year old camper is currently in Sydney and comes with copies of both the manual and service book, along with manuals for the kitchen appliances and a spare set of keys.
