
Although unlikely to be available for purchase in Australia any time soon, this outlandish double storey expanding motorhome from Chinese auto giant SAIC might provide some inspiration for local motorhome builders looking to stay ahead of the pack...
Similar in concept to the Queensland-built, double decker SLRV MAN motorhome unveiled in 2019, the Chinese-market SAIC Maxus Life Home V90 Villa Edition transforms from a standard-height motorhome on the road to a two-level luxury base camp, thanks to a roof that pops up to create a second-level enclosed living area with balcony.
Access to the upper deck is via an elevator where, judging by the computer renderings, the 12.4 square metres of open plan space with its stylish low-slung furniture functions as a luxury bar and lounge area or Zen tea room.
The upstairs windows can be adjusted between clear and opaque for some privacy, and there's plenty of LED strip lighting on the motorhome to deliver a luxury yacht-like appearance at night.

Down below, the 'ground floor' living area expands to 20 square metres thanks to twin slide-outs, with a kitchen, bathroom and more living space for the family.
We're not sure if SAIC has built any production versions yet of the range-topping 'Villa Edition' motorhome, but it will reportedly sell for the equivalent of $524,000 -- big motorhome money but a bargain compared to the circa-$2million paid for SLRV's double decker off-roader...
