Australian fans of iconic American travel trailer brand, Airstream, now have a more affordable option to choose from with the arrival of a new, two-berth entry-level model priced from $89,990.
With a Tare weight of 1652kg, ATM of 2045kg and body length of 5.79m (19ft 3in), the new single axle Airstream 579 Sport is considerably smaller and lighter than the existing 624 and 762 International models introduced to Australia more than two years ago.
At 2.21m wide, the 579 Sport is also 23cm narrower than the bigger International models, adding to its towability on Australian roads.
Unlike the bigger Airstream models, the new 579 Sport was specifically designed for our right-hand drive market, with two unique layouts and a single door on the ‘correct’ side rather than one on both sides.
The full width rear ensuite also has a cassette toilet for the first time on an Aussie Airstream, in lieu of a larger-capacity black water tank more common on American RVs.
However, the 579 Sport retains the unmistakeable polished aluminium, aerodynamic curves common to all Airstream models, as well as a very airy and inviting interior complete with soft leather and other upmarket finishes.
Two layouts are available: a glamorous but less practical ‘lounge’ layout (pictured) which includes a rear ensuite, kitchen in the middle and a large lounge area that extends from one side of the van all the way to the front, U-shaped dinette, which converts to a double bed.
The other ‘standard’ layout includes a fixed, east-west double bed at the front, small dinette and kitchen in the middle and a full width ensuite at the rear.
The 579 Sport comes equipped with a 90 litre three way fridge freezer, convection oven and microwave, four-burner cooktop, roof-top air-conditioner, 75 litre fresh water tank, hot water heater and furnace, TV and audio unit, deep-cycle battery and two, 9kg gas bottles.
Despite it being up to $45,000 cheaper than the bigger Airstream models, Airstream Australia’s Alan Imrie expects the range-topping 762 International to remain the most popular model in the line-up due to its motorhome-like, free camping capabilities.
However, a 579 Sport has already been sold to Airstream Adventures, a new rental business that will offer luxury mobile accommodation at various events.
Reflecting the rich heritage of the 78-year old American RV brand, the three-model Airstream range on display for the first time at the NSW Caravan, Camping, RV & Holiday Supershow was accompanied by a classic 1964 model that Airstream Australia is currently restoring for its owner.
Imrie said it’s unlikely any more models from Airstream America's travel trailer range will make their way Down Under. However, he is keen to introduce the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based Airstream Interstate campervan, if a suitable right-hand drive version was to become available.
Meanwhile, with prices of new 2014 models expected to rise by around $5000, Airstream Australia is doing run-out deals on existing stock at the Sydney Supershow, with the 624 International cut to $109,990 and the 762 offered from $129,990.
