Purchasing a Cub Campers' caravan is now potentially a lot cheaper exercise with entry pricing for the Sydney manufacturer's first 16ft off-road hybrid model slashed by around 30 per cent.
Launching at the 2023 NSW Caravan, Camping and Holiday Supershow (April 18-23), the new cut-price Cub L16 hybrid off-road caravan has a starting price of $89,990, or $40,000 less than the similar sized C16 version released in September 2022, but as a result it misses out on some of the more upmarket off-grid, safety and comfort features fitted as standard on the original model.
The new 16ft Cub L16 model shares many features with the range-topping C16 van including a fully insulated, fibreglass composite body, galvanised steel chassis, 12in drum brakes and independent trailing arm coil suspension, along with an internal shower/toilet and external shower, inside and outside kitchen and the choice of three layouts including two couples' floorplans and a family bunk layout.
However, the new L16 entry model comes standard with an AL-KO 50mm ball off-road coupling fitted instead of the C16's Cruisemaster DO-35 coupling, and black 17in alloy wheels with 265/65R17 Dunlop Grand Trek AT3G tyres instead of the 265/65R17 BF Goodrich KM-4 MT rubber on the C16.
The L16 also misses out on the C16's off-grid package, with a single 150Ah lithium battery, 360W rooftop solar and single 100L fresh water and 100L grey tank fitted as standard, instead of the 300Ah lithium battery and 720W solar power set-up and 200L fresh water and 100L grey water capacity on the C16.
The L16 comes standard with a Fusion stereo and speakers, a Redarc BMS30 charger and RedVision display but misses out on the Redarc 3000W inverter now fitted as standard to the C16.
The L16 also misses out on the front toolbox and Truma diesel air and water heater fitted standard to the C16. Also missing from the L16 standard kit is AL-KO Tow Assist, a rooftop air conditioner, 27in Smart TV and rearview camera.
A number of options are available on the L16 including Off Grid and Technology packs that include some of the standard features fitted to the C16.
Not surprisingly, the new entry-level Cub L16 comes in a bit lighter with a Tare weight of around 1900kg, 170kg (Tare) ball weight and 2500kg ATM, compared to the 2040kg Tare, 175kg ball weight and 2700kg ATM for the C16.
Cub also recently updated its C16 model to make it better value for money, adding new standard features including a 3000W inverter, bed step, outside toolbox, 'wardrobe' storage as well as no-cost layout options.
