American caravan specialist Cell Caravans has only been on the Australian RV scene for four years, but in that time it’s developed a reputation for offering caravans a little bit different to what’s normally available on the local market.
Some good examples include the nine-berth Shadow Cruiser Homestead family caravan, the fire engine red Cell Ultra-Lite, and the unique, V-nosed Viewfinder.
The Melbourne-based company even considered selling a ground-breaking Earthbound RV model for $200,000 – what surely would have been a record price for a new caravan Down Under.
Now Cell has added another head-turning, US-built model to its range, The Island 21ft, featuring what is believed to be an Australian-first ‘island bench’ layout.
Like most American caravans, the tandem axle 21ft Island features a colourful exterior with a striking blend of grey, beige and burgundy for its glossy, gel coat fibreglass finish.
But the biggest surprise awaits inside, where the addition of two slide-outs – one on each side facing each other – has enabled a large island bench with cupboards, double sink and fresh and filtered taps to be positioned in the middle of the ‘open plan’ living/kitchen area without restricting access.
One slide-out contains the kitchen galley including cooktop, convection oven, and 185 litre fridge while the other contains the club lounge/dinette with seating for six.
With ‘country style’ decor including Antique Ivory cabinets, corian benchtops and plenty of windows, the interior has the welcoming feel of a country cottage.
A wall partition separates the front bedroom, with its north-south queen bed, from the living area, while also doubling as a home for the entertainment system which includes a 24in TV, DVD player, USB and Ipod connectivity and interior/exterior speakers.
There’s also a rear corner ensuite with separate shower and toilet and wash basin/vanity, and a roof-top air-conditioner.
Other ‘American’ touches include an automatic powered awning, electric stabilizing legs and powered front jack for hands-free maneuvering.
The Island 21ft has a Tare weight of around 2200kg and ATM of 2700kg.
The model displayed at the 2014 Queensland Caravan & Camping Show was fitted with optional leather upholstery and Perspex splashback and had an introductory price of $79,850.
