Cattle station caters to caravanners

The first caravan park along the gateway to the world heritage listed Bungle Bungle Range is set to open next month

Intrepid caravanners and campers are being invited to "be one of the first people to experience the wonders of the Bungle Bungle Station Stay Caravan Park".

The new park located in the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park, is being touted as "the first and only facility at the turn off to the Bungle Bungles, just 750 metres from the Great Northern Highway".

Australia's newest caravan park is located on the Mabel Downs cattle station, which recently housed workers in this remote West Australian region during a $92 million upgrade of the Great Northern Highway.

"When building the site we intended to keep as close to nature as possible with plenty of space, leaving the bush and trees to be enjoyed," the park's website explains.

The first stage of the Bungle Bungle caravan park will open on May 1, including 20 powered and 55 non-powered sites. More powered sites are planned, and for those looking for something a bit different, African Safari Tents with ensuites will be available from the end of May.

The ‘station stay’ park should be a real back to nature experience, with no concrete slabs or grassy areas to begin with, while those using powered sites will have restrictions on the number of appliances that can be run at the one time due to the park’s electricity supply coming from generators.

Amenities include portable-type shower/toilets, a BBQ area, caravan storage, and a bush restaurant "with real station food on the menu such as stews, curries and damper".

The caravan park doesn't have a liquor licence so any alcohol will be BYO. Well-behaved pets on a lead are allowed, and with no rubbish facilities on site all rubbish must be taken out of the park when leaving.

Rates range from $15 per person per night for basic camping, to $45 per night for two people for a powered site. African Safari tents are $295 per person per night including dinner, bed and breakfast.

The park also offers a number of tours including a two hour 4WD Station Tour ($75 pp), and a 40 minute helicopter flight for a bird’s eye view of the spectacular Bungle Bungle sandstone formations ($395 pp).
