Carbon-fibre caravan breaks cover

First exterior images of radical and super-expensive, all carbon-fibre American caravan released

After months of waiting the covers have finally been taken off the world’s first carbon-fibre caravan.

Built by fledgling American company Global Caravan Technologies and backed by Chinese investors, the stealth black 35ft CR-1 model was unveiled at a private function in Indiana, USA at the factory of Dallara IndyCar, one of the partners in the unique project that also utilizes technology from the aerospace industry.

Apart from exterior images few specific details about the tandem-axle, six-berth caravan have been revealed, although CGT CEO Charles Hoefer said extensive use of carbon fibre has resulted in a caravan much stronger and lighter than other, similar-sized American caravans. He claims the slippery shape will also lead to big improvements in fuel economy.

No images of the interior are available yet, but CGT is promising “impeccable luxury” including a mix of carbon fibre and leather trim, walk-through master bath, and adjustable tint privacy glass.

It will also feature an optional smart control platform, where most electrical functions can be monitored and controlled via iOS, Android, or PC operating systems.

Other trick features on the six-berth, 10.3m long van include custom, automotive designed exterior lighting, run-flat tyres, two awnings, satellite TV and wi-fi router, 700W solar and 300Ah battery system, integrated generator, and washer and dryer.

“The CR-1 Carbon is GCT’s proud achievement today,” Hoefer said at the unveiling. “This product demonstrates our capabilities, and we are not slowing down as we are making plans to launch a super-luxury fifth wheel, along with plans to begin motorhome development in 2015.”

Pricing for the super-luxury CR-1 is expected to start at US$160,000, with export markets including China and Australia on the cards.
