Ever wondered what happens to old caravans when they pass their use-by date?
While many are put out to pasture (literally), some are given a new life through restorers and fans of all things retro.
However, it seems the unluckiest ones end up in a thousand pieces, thanks to the increasingly popular form of family entertainment known as caravan derbies.
Regularly held in front of big crowds as part of speedway meetings around Australia, these demolition derbies see unloved caravans and trailers towed by equally tired tow vehicles, bash and crash their way around dirt circuits until a winner is declared.
The latest example occurred in late-March at Speedway City, the largest dirt track motorsport complex in South Australia. Dubbed the Easter Thrillerama, the event included a monster fireworks display as well as the usual races involving purpose-built sprintcars.
But judging by the crowd's reaction, the Caravan, Boat & Dunny Derby was as keenly anticipated as any event on the night. The organisers also sensibly scheduled it last, given all the debris and mess that would be left to be cleaned up!
After paying a $50 entry fee, the 15 or so competitors vied for prizemoney as well as trophies for first, second and third, although how the judges picked the winners would be anyone's guess!
As can be seen in the hilarious video below, the mayhem was all over in about eight minutes, with a lone caravan remaining intact amongst the wreckage. Maybe it will get another run next year...
