Bosch Australia has revealed plans to release a new trailer safety system that incorporates both an anti-sway function as well as ABS (anti-lock braking).
However, the new Bosch system is said to be more advanced than rival products, being able to brake individual wheels in the event of sway as well as having an ABS function.
In the event of a sway, the Bosch system will apply all the trailer’s brakes to reduce it and apply more brake force if required until the sway is under control. It can also sense if a wheel lifts off the ground, reducing brake force to that wheel to minimise potential damage to the tyre when it hits the ground again.
The Bosch system is independent of, but compatible with tow car safety systems, and requires only electric brakes with an approved brake controller.
Mounted to the trailer’s chassis, the system comprises an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with integrated motion sensor and wheel speed sensors.
Bosch Australia is the German firm’s Global Centre of Competence for Trailer Safety and the ECU for the new system will be manufactured at its Clayton, Victoria facility. It will go on sale in early-2018 and be offered initially in Australian and US markets. It’s also likely to be available as a retro-fit at some stage. For the full story, click
