We’ve banged on before about the potential vehicle protecting as well as life saving benefits of the latest electronic stability control system for caravans.
However, now we’ve come across some real-time evidence highlighting not only the importance of driving sensibly when towing a caravan but also having a passive safety back-up like the Al-Ko system if things do go wrong.
As you can see from the video below, taken from a camera inside the truck, the seemingly innocuous task of overtaking a road train on a straight piece of highway can have devastating consequences.
In this case, the car and caravan appear to have been unsettled by side winds generated by the truck, resulting in excessive sway. Rather than try and maintain speed or even accelerate and ‘drive out’ of the sway, it appears the driver has applied the tow vehicle’s brakes, which could have exacerbated the problem and contributed to the dramatic roll-over.
Fortunately, there appears to have been no serious injuries, but it could have been a lot worse…
