Some people spend as much time with their caravans or motorhomes as their pets, so it’s no surprise they can become as emotionally attached and give their mobile homes a special name too.
While the practice is popular down under – although probably most with vintage van owners – it’s almost a national pastime in Old Blighty, according to a recent survey.
The poll, conducted by UK insurance specialist Caravan Guard, found 81 per cent of respondents had given their caravan or motorhome a pet name.
While some were named after a lost loved one or favourite places to visit, others were given less serious names like ‘Stalker’ because “she follows us all the time”;  ‘Eva’ as “that’s what we do” (heave-her) and “3P” for Purple Passion Palace.
Other descriptive names included ‘Wobbly Box’, ‘The Burrow’, ‘The Magic Carpet’ and “Little Mo as she’s our little mobile getaway”. One was named ‘Pheonix’ as his last van was set on fire and totally destroyed, and this one had risen from the ashes!
There was also “Poppy” the caravan, named after the family cat and “Carolvan” named after the owner’s wife.
Names beginning with B were especially popular, including ‘Bertha – the 5-berther’; Betty, Bessie, Betty Boop, Bella, and Big Bertha.
Girls’ names also featured prominently, with the likes of April, Anna, Claudette, Daisy, Helga, Libby, Miranda, Mabel, Peggy, Rosie, Ruby, Tilly, Wendy, and Wilma, among many others.
