Caravan park thefts prompt police warning

Queensland's Mt Isa police are warning caravanners to lock or secure their valuables after a number of thefts in caravan parks in recent months.

"Whilst there have been only six reported property related offences in our caravan parks within the past two months, five of these offences could have been prevented, had the vehicles/caravans involved been locked and secured," the Queensland police unit said in a statement.

While not wishing to raise alarm bells the Mt Isa police said it was a "friendly reminder" to caravan owners and travellers to remain vigilant with their security measures.

"Just ensure that your relaxed and carefree holiday mood doesn’t affect your ability to maintain appropriate security measures, as caravan parks can also serve as ideal locations for opportunistic offenders," they warned.

"Caravan parks are at times targeted by property offenders, as they are aware of the likelihood of easy access to unsecured vehicles, caravans and personal items.

"Remember, it is your responsibility to keep yourself and your personal belongings safe and secure. Many offences may go unreported, as travellers are usually eager to continue with their holiday plans."

The police offered the following security tips for RV travellers:

Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times – even if it is parked directly next to your caravan.

Consider only carrying a minimal amount of cash and keeping it on you at all times.

Ensure valuables are out of sight at all times and locked in a secure location.

Consider installing portable sensor lighting or a small portable CCTV camera outside your caravan.

Secure expensive items such as portable fridges and bicycles, using cables and padlocks if necessary.

Do not leave your caravan or tent unsecured at any time.
