On display this week at the world’s biggest caravan show, Germany’s Caravan Salon, the unique caravan blends the latest ‘green’ technologies with features more often found on off-grid ‘tiny’ houses.
Dubbed as a self-sufficient rotating caravan, the sCarabane features a full-length, fold-out deck with walls that sits under a pull-out awning to create a swish, above-ground outdoor living zone for the whole family.
While an equally large, fold-out section on the other side creates a parents’ bedroom with kids’ bedroom next door.
Apparently it’s a one-person job to set up, and takes about 30 minutes to fold up again. However, at 7.8m x 2.5m long and weighing around 2500kg, it requires a decent tow vehicle.
Harnessing plenty of ‘green’ energy (although the cooker still runs on gas), the eCarabane has a 500W solar array on the roof, and it sits on a circular track that allows it to rotate and follow the sun.
There’s also a parabolic concentrator mirror on the roof that heats up the water, and a telescopic vertical axis wind turbine that will generate up to 500 watts of clean power.
Inside, the city apartment-style layout includes a dining area that converts to another bed and a bathroom with toilet, shower, sink and washing machine.
Green Cat Technologies has plans to develop the eCarabane further by fitting rainwater harvesting and water filtration systems.
The French company is seeking partners to help put its fold-up van into production, so there’s a small chance it will make its way Down Under some day…
