With interest in recreational vehicle touring at an all-time high and caravan sales booming, it's a good time to reflect on how we got here, as well as how RV touring holidays have changed over the years...
Whether you're a hardcore history buff or just interested in a nostalgic trip down memory lane, two new well researched books on RV history are about to hit the bookshelves.
"Recreational Vehicles: A World History, 1872-1939" by Andrew Woodmansey is claimed to be the "first ever international history of recreational vehicles."
The extensively researched 240-page book is described as "fully illustrated with over 250 period, high quality black and white images of pre-WW2 RVs from the UK, France, USA, Germany, Australia and New Zealand including many published for the first time."
Also due for release around March this year is "The Touring Caravan Story: Over a Century of Towing" by Andrew Jenkinson.
According to the publishers' blurb the new 150-page book contains, "the story of the modern touring caravan in the UK, from its origins in the 1919, and how it became a rich man's pastime through the 1920s, to how it found its way to the middle classes by the 1930s..."
The "heavily illustrated" book also takes "a look at accessories and add-ons, from tow bars to awnings", as well as "featuring many memories from caravanners looking back over many joyful holidays..."
Both authors live and breathe the RV lifestyle and have a strong background in RV-related writing, with UK-based Jenkinson publishing 12 previous books on touring caravan history and motorhome history, while Sydney-based RV historian Woodmansey is also the author of the excellent Caravan Buyers Guide published in 2014.
Both books are available from online book sellers including Booktopia, where 'Recreational Vehicles: A World History, 1872-1939' costs $33.76 as an E-book or $72.74 as a hardcover.
'The Touring Caravan Story' is available for pre-order from the same site, with the paperback priced at $35.50.
