Video footage of a caravanner swerving wildly across a Sunshine Coast highway before slamming into a lamp post has gone viral online.
The dashcam vision shows a tandem axle Franklin caravan towed by a Toyota LandCruiser travelling in the right lane before the caravan starts to sway, causing the rig to cross over into the left lane before crashing into a pole in the median strip.
According to Clayton’s Towing, which posted a two-minute video of the accident on its Facebook site on the week-end, the driver had many years of towing experience but was towing the new van for the first time. “The driver and his wife were rushed to hospital, luckily were okay and made full recoveries," the post said.
The footage taken near Forest Glen, also shows the van and tow vehicle flipped on their side, before the smashed-up van is loaded onto a tow truck.
“A lot of newer vans appear to depend on load to be added to gain a desirable tow ball weight,” the post said.
Clayton's also pointed the finger at the fitment of a weight distribution hitch, which can have “an undesired effect on vans with a lower or even close to correct tow ball weight”.
The van was also said to be fitted with an electronic ‘anti-sway’ stability control system.
