A European automotive specialist has unveiled a 'world first' all-aluminium motorhome with a 'camping' body built just like a modern car or SUV.
Germany's SD Automotive Solutions has used its expertise in manufacturing 'body in white' prototypes for the automotive industry to come up with the NEXSD One motorhome prototype which was displayed for the first time at the 2022 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf.
"We've spent a long time looking at the problems that motorhome users face every day," SD Automotive Solutions said. "And we have combined our experience and expertise to solve these problems.
"From our own passion for camping and the technical possibilities as a manufacturer of complete bodies for the automotive industry, a completely new motorhome category has emerged that combines the best of van and semi-integrated motorhomes."
The 'Opti-integrated' motorhome prototype is based on a Volkswagen Crafter chassis, and SD Automotive says its ultra-light all-aluminium body allows for larger payloads (up to 700kg), than you'd normally get with a conventional 3500kg GVM, motorised RV.
Other claimed advantages of the welded unitary body construction include improved crash safety as well as vehicle handling, with integration of the latest driver assistance aids, along with car-like 'single key' central locking and a more aesthetically pleasing, 'one-piece' automotive exterior design.
"Thanks to the reinforcing aluminium frame, a collision does not immediately result in a total loss. Sheet metal damage to the outer skin can be easily repaired," SD Automotive says.
Most of the body parts are recyclable, and the flexibility provided by the bespoke aluminium construction also allows for better storage utilization, with the prototype boasting integrated side panel storage lockers, as well as a second, lower rear tailgate that makes it easier to load smaller items like shopping bags without having to open up the rest of the motorhome.
Internally, the straighter side walls provide greater options when it comes to layouts and storage, as well as helping to maximise the 12 square metres of interior space. The 6.9m long prototype's sample layout incorporated a rear lounge/dinette with drop-down bed, kitchenette and ensuite with compost toilet and shower.
SD Automotive is hoping to partner with an existing RV specialist to bring a production version of the Crafter-based NEXSD One prototype to market.
