Camps Australia Wide 4, B4-size edition

Travellers often exchange snippets of information about interesting places to stay, and close to the top of the list is where to stay for nothing or almost nothing

If you're on the road for months at a time, any opportunity to stay at a very cheap camping spot helps the budget.

The reliability of this whispered information is always a little suspect, as word-of-mouth messages often get mangled. But when Camps Australia Wide appeared on the scene in 2001, it offered a reliable directory of free and low-cost sites. It took Philip and Helene Proctor many years to accumulate the data, with more inclusions in successive editions.

New owners Philip and Cathryn Fennell have now published the fourth edition in A4 format, along with a companion book with photos of camping spots. They researched on the road for 14 months and listed over 3000 sites and related details, predominantly based on low cost. They also list over 700 dump points for waste water and chemical toilets.

In response to demand from readers who needed a larger format, the B4-size volume was released. It's roughly 40mm wider and 50mm taller than A4, with photo images of campsites included in many instances. It has a hard cover and flexible spiral binding, allowing it to open flat with a rigid base.

Camping opportunities are categorised by rest area, camp area, camp spots, picnic area, parking area and caravan parks. To ensure that readers are kept up-to-date, updates and amendments are listed on the Camps Australia Wide website.

An increasing number of locations come with GPS coordinates, and 25 distinctive icons denote details such as stay duration, pets allowed, disabled access, mobile phone reception, fees, public phone, shade and barbecue. National and state parks are also included.

The book is organised on a colour-coded state/territory basis which simplifies searching, and incorporates a large-print version of Hema's Easy-Read Road Atlas.

The B4 version is no lightweight, but it is strong and will last. Because it includes a detailed road atlas for all of Australia (showing fuel stops, stores, and tourist attractions) it has almost all the information travellers need to get going. The 376-page B4-size edition of Camps Australia Wide 4 is soft spiral bound with hard covers and retails for $79.95.
