Camper trailer production up

Sales of cheaper tent trailers offset drop in demand for larger, pricier caravans

Despite the dramatic decline of the Australian camper trailer industry, production of locally-built camper trailers was trending upwards in early-2018, while demand for larger caravans softened.

According to the latest figures from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, the first two months of 2018 saw a four per cent increase in local camper trailer production, compared to the same period in 2017.

Perhaps indicating an increasing number of family as well as other price-conscious buyers entering the market, camper trailers rose to represent around 20 per cent of overall production locally – up from 16 per cent in 2017.

Year-to-date figures show that caravan production dropped by 2.6 per cent in terms of overall market share, although caravans still make up more than 50 per cent of the overall market.

The biggest drop in the first two months of 2018 was in production of large, 6.0m-plus caravans, which has fallen by 3.6 per cent compared to last year.

Production of campervans and motorhomes continues to rise, with demand for motorized vehicles up 12 per cent compared to 2018 levels.

Of the 3127 RVs built locally in the first two months of 2018, 2915 were towable and 212 motorised.
