The importance of securing along with insuring your valuable RV assets adequately has been thrust into the spotlight again, with a number of camper trailers and caravans stolen recently in Melbourne bayside suburbs.
7News has reported a number of thefts so far in January from suburbs including Hampton, Black Rock, Parkdale and Mordialloc.
In one case, CCTV footage showed a brazen thief arriving on foot and taking only a few minutes to unhitch a Jayco camper before driving off with it.
The owner of the 2015 Jayco Swan Ouback, Katie Hopkins told 7News the family was asleep on New Year’s Eve when the camper was taken outside their home.
"“We got up in the morning, went out to walk the dog and it’s gone,” she said.
“This has been our family holidays for years. We’ve travelled around half of Australia in it. We spent six months living out of it.
“It’s got amazing memories for us and it’s something we worked really hard to get.”
A 2007 Jayco StarCraft caravan valued at $50,000 was also stolen recently from a marine dealership in Somerset, Tasmania.
Tasmania Police said it appeared the caravan was towed away by a stolen white 2013 Toyota Landcruiser around 10.30pm on January 27.
Police advise owners of caravans and camper trailers to use a tow locking mechanism or wheel clamp to prevent opportunistic thieves from easily hooking up and towing away their pride and joy.
Buyers are also urged to check the VIN number before purchasing a second-hand RV.
