A rental company across the ditch has beaten its Aussie rivals by introducing a unique, trailerable RV option to its motorhome and car rental fleet.
Go Rentals, which claims to be New Zealand’s largest independent rental vehicle company, has introduced a fleet of locally-built hard-bodied camper trailers. Looking like a cross between a workman’s trailer and a lightweight Euro fiberglass caravan, the Go Glamper campers are described as lightweight, comfortable, easy to use and self-contained.
They share features with other small caravans and campers, like a double bed, cassette toilet, water tanks, sink with manual pump, solar-powered battery system, two-burner portable stove and awning.
However, to make them easier to ‘lock and leave’, the fiberglass campers feature windows that are lockable from the outside, and they are supplied with lockable wheel clamps. Also unusual is a separate toilet ‘room’ at the front, for some privacy when using the cassette toilet.
The Glamper models seem to be pitched at caravan newbies or younger drivers who want the freedom of detaching the accomodation when they hit a town or campground. Go Rentals can also supply a Toyota HilLux tow vehicle or similar if required.
The rental campers are currently available for hire from Auckland or Christchurch with more locations rolled out in the future. Launched in 1999, Go Rentals runs a fleet of 3000 rental vehicles throughout New Zealand, and claims 500,000 people have used one of their vehicles in the past three years.
No major RV rental business operating in Australia currently offers trailerable RVs, although Apollo Motorhomes did have some caravans on its rental fleet a few years ago.
