According to latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, campervans were the fastest growing motor vehicle category in Australia last year (albeit off a small base, with 60,900 vehicles registered in January 2016).
Campervan registrations were up by 4.5 per cent in the 12 months to January 31, 2016, followed by light rigid trucks (up 3.4 per cent), motorcycles (2.8 per cent) and light commercial vehicles (2.8 per cent).
The ABS classifies campervans as “self-propelled motor vehicles containing an area primarily used for accommodation. This includes motor homes and powered caravans”.
Recreational vehicles have been the fastest growing vehicle type in Australia by registration for the past six years.
According to data from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, a combined total of 10,770 camper trailers, caravans and motorhomes were registered for the first time in the first three months of 2016.
This figure includes 7323 caravans, 2319 camper trailers and 1128 motorhomes and was up slightly on the previous year (10,603).
There were 48,446 new RV registrations in total in 2015, compared to 46.054 the previous year.
RV registrations in Australia hit a peak of 586,585 in early-2015, which included 528,210 caravans and camper trailers and 58,375 campervans and motorhomes (up five per cent overall on the previous year).
There were just under 18.4 million registered motor vehicles in Australia as at January 31, 2016, which included almost 14 million passenger vehicles and more than 800,000 motorcycles.
