It's not too late to join in a unique, fund-raising outback adventure that takes its name from one of the most entertaining Aussie outback films of all time.
The inaugural Queen of the Desert Festival kicked off in 2015 as a celebration of the many memorable movies shot in outback South Australia, as well as helping to raise money for men’s health.
Participants in this year’s event from March 22-26 will again enjoy a leisurely drive along the Oodnadatta Track in far north South Australia, including overnight stops at the Marree and William Creek hotels, Oodnadatta Pink Roadhouse, Arckaringa Station and Coober Pedy.
To take part in the family-friendly adventure, you require a capable 4WD vehicle fitted with a UHF radio and be reasonably self-sufficient, with accommodation either at campgrounds or cabins en-route.
Participants are encouraged to dress up themselves and their 4x4 in
the theme of their favourite Aussie flick, with prizes for the ‘best
dressed’ crew/vehicle as well as individual and team prizes.
The entry fee of $150 per person (children under 16 are free) covers general costs including an expert Arabana guide and accompanying nurse and mechanic, and entertainment including a nightly blue laser light and music performance.
Participants will also be keen to take a scenic flight over Lake
Eyre, given recent floods creating a multi-coloured feast for the eyes
including plenty of birdlife across the massive saltpan lake.
Last year the car used in the movie The Rover joined the convoy while Blue September ambassador and entertainment legend Mark Holden is set to join the festival for the second year running.
