With the number of electric vehicles on Australia’s roads only set to increase, the Caravan Industry Association of Australia is calling once again on the Federal Government to explore ways in which caravan parks could play a major role in boosting the national EV charging network.
As a pivotal part of Australia’s $27 billion domestic tourism industry, and with a national footprint that extends to over 2600 locations, caravan parks could potentially deliver a significant expansion for the charging network, the body says.
Furthermore, the threat of limiting charging opportunities could “significantly stifle the caravanning industry”, it continues.
“As an industry, we see the challenges presented by the transition,” said Stuart Lamont, CEO of Caravan Industry Association of Australia.
“We also want to be an active contributor to the solution and with a truly national network of caravan parks in some of Australia’s key regional destinations and overnight transit routes we believe we can be at the forefront of the transition.
“We are looking to government to support a market readiness report to articulate and demonstrate the architecture and road map for an open market response to a fast charger network provision. We know technology also exists that parks can utilise to not only be a charger location but be a community energy collector and contributor.
However, Mr Lamont conceded there were sizeable hurdles to overcome before the opportunities presented by the transition could be embraced.
“Early conversations have been promising in terms of the technology options for a network, and we know possibilities to be a major contributor are endless. Unfortunately, these options require significant financial contribution and a will to be solution focused.”
The Caravan Industry Association of Australia says it is keen to work with government and industry to explore solutions, while it is open to approaches from any strategic partners.
