The South Australian Caravan and Camping Show is set to take advantage of growing interest in vintage caravans, with plans to put on a massive display of pre-1970 caravans during next year's running of the five-day event.
The organisers of the display, The Caravan and Camping Industries Association of South Australia (CCIASA), is hoping around 100 vintage vans towed by matching period vehicles will participate in the inaugural National Vintage Caravan Grand Parade.
Scheduled for February 22, 2013, the parade will involve registered entrants towing their classic caravans to the southern entrance of the Adelaide Showground on Leader St, Wayville. They will then be directed onto the central arena to create an impressive spectacle of our caravanning past, before the main gates open to the public.
The event has already stirred up interest on internet forums, with vintage van enthusiasts from around Australia expected to travel to Adelaide for what could become Australia’s largest gathering of pre-1970 vans.
“It is great to see that enthusiasm for the history of the Australian caravan industry and restoration of vintage caravans continues to grow,” said CCIASA chief Stuart Livingstone.
“The intention is to provide ample time for vintage caravan owners and enthusiasts to plan their trip to Adelaide and be part of the grand parade next year.”
To help promote the event, a small display including a restored, homemade 1950s bondwood caravan, was set up at this year’s South Australian Caravan and Camping Show.
CCIASA representatives are also hoping to drum up further interest when they visit the 2012 Vintage Caravan Nationals, held at the Cowra Van Park in NSW from April 30-May 4.
A dedicated website – vintagecaravangrandparade.com.au – has been set up to allow vintage vanners to register for the grand parade and to provide regular updates on the event.
The CCIASA is also supporting the vintage van movement in another way with the publication of a new book on Australian caravanning history called Still Swinging The Billy; also launched at this year’s SA caravan show.
