Dog- and wheelchair-friendly motorhomes, smartphone-operated heating and cooling systems and possibly the world’s first brown caravan, are some of the highlights of this year’s Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The 54th running of the greatest RV show on earth runs from August 28-September 6 and is expected to attract up to 175,000 people through the doors.
They'll need comfy walking shoes though, with 590 international exhibitors including 130 caravan and motorhome brands spread over 195,000 square metres of indoor (11 halls) and outdoor space.
While most RVs at the show are unavailable in Australia, with the odd exception like Knaus, the show is a popular destination for Aussie manufacturers looking for the latest styling trends or technology to provide an edge in the competitive local market.
One of the most glamorous new caravans at this year's show is the Brillant 650 TF from German manufacturer Fendt. As well a glossy interior that could be straight out of a luxury yacht, it features the Truma’s latest iNet system which allows both air-conditioning and heating systems to be controlled remotely by a smartphone app.
Another German manufacturer Volkner debuted a new Mercedes-Benz bus-based motorhome costing close to $2million with such luxuries as a car garage and separate heated and ventilated storage compartment for ski boots and gloves.
Along with its predominantly brown coloured c’style caravan (it’s also available in other “unusual colour options”), German brand Dethleffs introduced an industry-first “four paw package” for furry RV travellers.
Suitable for cats or dogs, the motorhome option includes doggy seat belts and an attached foam bed with exterior leash as well as feeding dish and water bowl holders.
Developed with a rehab mobility centre, the Sprinter-based Reha Camper is purpose-built for wheelchair users and comes with a remote control operated drive-on lift. The kitchen, living and bathroom areas are all wheel-chair accessible, and various operating aids help the driver steer the motorhome.
