Car enthusiasts will recognise the name Bolwell as the influential, Australian low-volume manufacturer of fibreglass sports cars during the 1960s and '70s, as well as the more recent, 21st century Nagari supercar.
But the Mordialloc, Melbourne-based manufacturer has made its fortune as a specialist manufacturer of advanced composite materials, building more than 30,000 truck bodies for Kenworth, for example.
Now Bolwell is making a serious move into the RV arena with the design and construction of a radical new moulded composite caravan under its Bolwell RV arm.
To be launched at Melbourne Leisurefest later this month, the Bolwell Edge 5.0-metre pop-top crossover van, will feature fully moulded aerodynamic construction with independent off-road suspension and space-age composite reinforcement.
The heavy duty Bolwell crossover van is said to offer low weight, low drag and exceptional aerodynamic stability.
It combines Bolwell’s independent suspension with moulded fibreglass reinforced with carbon fibre and high-tech synthetic fibre for rigidity, impact protection and light weight.
According to Bolwell, the Edge is designed to tow easily and economically behind medium-sized tow vehicles such as a Subaru Outback.
The attention-grabbing Edge is the product of two years of hard work by Vaughan Bolwell and his small team, and a close-to-production version of the Edge should be finished just in time for display at Leisurefest.
Although this will be the company’s first stand-alone caravan, Bolwell is no stranger to the RV industry, having supplied Trackmaster with heavy-duty components for its off-road caravans.
The 3rd annual Melbourne Leisurefest will be held at Sandown Racecourse on September 30-October 3. For further information see melbourneleisurefest.com.au
