Grey nomads heading north for the winter, are being encouraged to leave a few weeks early and volunteer to assist rural families who have been severely affected by natural disasters.
Since 2009 BlazeAid volunteers have rebuilt hundreds of kilometres of fencing and helped farmers around Australia get back on their feet after devastating floods and bushfires. The not-for-profit organisation also assisted in the rebuilding of north Queensland after Cyclone Yasi.
Volunteers, which include international visitors as well as locals, can help for a few days or a few weeks. Age or physical strength is no barrier, with an age range of 12 to 85 years, and around a third are women.
Grey nomads in particular are encouraged to bring their campervan, caravan or tent and set up at any of the base camps in disaster-affected regions.
Most base camps are currently located in Queensland, in the flood-affected towns of Monto, Mundubbera, Murgon, Biggenden, Gin Gin and Dululu.
