Big crowds, striking new releases and strong sales, were the major themes of the 48th annual Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow held at Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds from June 8-13.
Show organiser, Caravanning Queensland, said that more than 900 RV vehicles worth $50 million were sold over the course of the show, which attracted more than 50,000 showgoers through the gates over the six days.
Sunland Caravans’ managing director Roy Wyss was one of the happiest exhibitors by show's end, reporting record sales of 25 caravans valued at more than $3 million.
Wyss said it wasn’t the number of sales that surprised him, rather the price range people were shopping in.
“After a successful show last year where people really enjoyed our entry level caravan, the Sunland LT, we anticipated another year of strong sales in this market,” he said.
“Surprisingly, we sold just two in this category, and the majority of our sales were our top of the range model, the SELX, which retails at about $140,000.”
Another buyer with deep pockets at the show was the Singapore businessman who snapped up the first Soul caravan that, with an eye-watering price tag of $185,689 is probably the most expensive van ever sold Down Under. Show manager, Jason Plant, said crowd numbers were up by nine percent on last year’s attendance by the Sunday, followed by only a small crowd on the final day as unlike other states a public holiday wasn’t held in Queensland on June 13.
“Even without the Queen’s Birthday public holiday that we’ve enjoyed in previous years, our exhibitors recorded bumper sales, some even experiencing record years,” he said.
Also helping pull in the punters was a number of celebrity appearances, including ‘Mr 4x4' Pat Callinan and Mal Leyland of Leyland Brothers fame, who was one of the daily seminar presenters.
