Big new Chinese off-road tow tug priced under $80K

GWM Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid arriving before Christmas, with 3000kg towing capacity and sharp pricing

The 2025 GWM Tank 500 Hi-4T has been priced Down Under, with the flagship plug-in hybrid 4x4 starting from $79,990 drive-away, though a special limited-time offer scrubs off an extra $2000.

As we’ve previously reported, the fitment of a plug-in hybrid system to the Tank 500 has forced the deletion of the regular hybrid’s third row, making the Hi4-T PHEV a five-seater.

But in good news for adventurers, it retains a mechanical 4x4 system with high- and low-range gearing and locking front, centre and rear differentials, combining it all with a potent 300kW/750Nm powertrain – comprised of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, a 120kW electric motor and a 37.11kWh battery pack.

GWM claims a combined fuel consumption of just 2.1L/100km on the more lenient NEDC cycle, along with a maximum driving range of 950km (120km on battery power). It’s worth noting though the PHEV gets a smaller 70-litre fuel tank compared to the Hybrid’s 80L.

Other highlights include vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, 50kW DC fast-charging, a 3000kg braked towing capacity and an 800mm wading depth.

Inside, a panoramic sunroof, 14.6-inch infotainment unit, Infinity audio system, and heated and cooled front seats with massage function also feature.

Marble White paint is standard, while three metallic paint options are offered for a $595 premium: Onyx Silver, Crystal Black and Dune Gold.

In the cabin, black Nappa leather is standard, however two-one Blue/Cream upholstery can be optioned alongside rhe Marble White or Crystal Black paintwork.

GWM covers the Tank 500 Hi4-T with a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, including 24/7 roadside assist and capped price servicing over the same period.

First deliveries of the 2025 GWM Tank 500 Hi4-T will begin later this quarter, making it the first plug-in hybrid ladder-frame SUV to come to market, though it will soon be joined by the Denza B5 and B8 duo.

GWM Australia hasn’t confirmed when the model’s introductory $2000 bonus will expire, but it’s unlikely to be around for too long.
