Big Bogan draws tourists

Five metre tall, stubby wearing statue is latest tourist attraction in Bogan Shire

The Sunshine Coast has the Big Pineapple, Ballina the Big Prawn, Dadswlls Bridge in Victoria the Giant Koala, and Darwin the Big Stubby.

Now a small town in central western NSW has… wait for it… the Big Bogan.

Officially unveiled this week at the Teamster’s Rest Area along the banks of the Bogan River in Nyngan, the Big Bogan joins around 150 other ‘Big’ tourist attractions dotted around the country.

In true bogan fashion, the five-metre tall, rusted steel silhouette sports a mullet, stubbies, singlet and Southern Cross tattoo, along with a rod, fish and esky at his thonged feet.

Bogan Shire Council major Ray Donald said at the unveiling, "The response has been very good, lots of interest”.

Like other ‘Big’ things, it’s hoped the Big Bogan will draw more tourists to the 2000-person town for the chance to grab a ‘selfie’.

Visitors will also be able to take home a memento of their encounter with the latest 'Big' thing with stubbie holders and replicas of the statue soon to be available for sale.
