Beyond motorhome hides secret garage
NSW-built motorhome carries rather than tows a city runaboutOn the road, Don and Maureen Kennedy’s Iveco Daily-based motorhome might look like the hundreds of others you regularly see driven around Australia by grey nomads, but once their rig is set up at the caravan park, eyebrows raise.
As well as having all the usual mod-cons that you’d expect from a quality motorhome, when the unique rig's rear hydraulic door opens, fellow campers are surprised to see another motor vehicle inside.
Designed and built by Pendle, NSW-based Beyond Caravans, the motorhome body incorporates the usual RV luxuries along with a garage big enough for their Smart micro car.
“I know there are a lot of people that tow a small vehicle on a trailer behind their motorhome, but I really didn’t like the thought of towing, so began thinking of ways to accommodate a car on-board,” Don Kennedy said.
“It took a lot of research and planning to design a system that would work on this size platform, but fortunately I came across a company called Beyond Caravans who had a lot of experience making slide-on campers and caravans, and they turned the vision into reality.”

As well as providing a runabout for short trips and exploring, the Smart car once emptied out the back via foldable ramps, frees up interior space to lower the ‘Happijac’ bedlift system for the queen bed.
The motorhome also features hydraulic levelling jacks at each corner to make set up easier, among other automatic functions.
Requiring a light truck licence to drive it, the car-hauling motorhome is the second Iveco camper the couple have owned, after previously driving a 2006 Daily cab chassis with slide-on camper around Australia.
The rear garage/bedroom is closed off from the front living area, which includes a slide-out dinette, kitchen, and ensuite. There’s also a few storage spaces and onboard water tanks to run the washing machine, plus a 600Ah battery system with 600W roof-top solar panels and 3000W invertor, to run appliances including a large-screen TV when camping off-the-grid.
“We’ve done one trip from Sydney to Melbourne so far in the Daily and we’re really looking forward to our next trip away,” Don Kennedy said.
