Bailey survives sweltering heat

A British caravan sold in Australia has survived extreme heat testing up to 60 degrees and 115 per cent humidity

We know many Aussie caravan manufacturers undertake various testing of their models, from running finished caravans through spray booths to check for water leaks to extensive ‘real world’ testing on either test tracks or in rough outback conditions.

However, we haven’t heard of any subjecting their vans to extreme heat testing, as Bailey Caravans in the UK recently did with one of its latest Unicorn models.

The leading UK manufacturer put a caravan into the heat chamber at the Alde Climate Centre, and conducted a number of tests to see whether interior components including furniture and adhesives could stand up to extreme heat.

These included a dry heat test up to 40 degrees Celcius, and a ‘wet’ test where saucepans of boiling water helped crank the interior temperature close to a scorching 60 degrees and humidity to a sweltering 115 per cent.

While not as relevant for UK buyers, who at home rarely experience temperatures above 30 degrees and are more concerned with having adequate insulation and heating systems to keep out the cold, Bailey UK says it’s an important consideration for overseas buyers in places like Australia, where extreme heat and humidity in the far north and central outback regions is common.

As you can see in this Caravan Times video, the results were promising, with no detrimental effects observed after two hours of testing.

The Alde Climate Centre in Derbyshire also heat tests individual RV components, putting them in a ‘hot box’ for up to 24 hours to determine any side effects.
