Back to the future

It's been lighting up the lives of Australians for 40 years, and now the iconic Eveready Dolphin lantern has been remodelled in response to consumer demand for a return to its original styling

The angular shape is a departure from the five previous design changes that had seen it move towards a slightly smaller, streamlined style.

Updated features on the new Mk 6 model include a firm grip and protected push button, and new xenon bulbs that are claimed to be 30 per cent brighter than standard krypton torch bulbs. The tough, waterproof and floating attributes have remained constant throughout the Dolphin's history.

A total of 16 million Dolphins have worked their way into homes, cars, trailers, boats, garages and sheds over the years. The lantern is also credited with saving the life of Sydney to Hobart yacht race contender, Gary Schipper. After being swept overboard during the race in 1998, Schipper was found hours later in the freezing ocean when rescuers spotted the bright beam issued by the Dolphin he was waving.

The Eveready Dolphin Mk 6 is available in yellow and comes with the lifetime warranty common to all Eveready torches. It sells for $17.99 at all major retail outlets and specialist stores.
