A fire at the production facility of one of Australia’s biggest RV manufacturers has resulted in the loss of one chassis, and should delay production by only 24 hours.
Around 100 fire fighters tackled the blaze at the Emu Plains, NSW caravan and motorhome production facility of Avida RV, with staff and nearby residents evacuated from the vicinity. Smoke billowing from the factory could be seen from the nearby Penrith business district.
Avida RV sales and marketing manager, Billy Falconer said all staff got out of the building without suffering injuries including smoke inhalation.
“(The fire) was contained to the back chassis section of the factory, “ he said. “Investigators are here this morning, and I reckon they will be finished by lunchtime, and then it’s business as usual after that.”
“The production line should be all up and running tomorrow,”
Avida’s second factory which builds cabinetry and body panels was unaffected.
“It could have been a lot worse… we do all our fire drills and follow all the standards as we’re meant to, and everyone is OK because they followed those procedures,” he said.
Avida RV builds around 600 caravans and motorhomes each year, and has recently been increasing staff numbers and ramping up production off the back of new model releases including a new luxury, Mercedes-Benz-based Torquay motorhome announced this month. It’s also set to boost its national dealer network further by the end of the year, with three new dealers about to sign up including two in Victoria and one in Western Australia.
