Have you seen this old, Holden ute and slide-on camper?
In the lead up to its 50th anniversary in 2015, Avida RV is trying to track down the first Freeway slide-on camper built on a Holden ute by Bruce Binns in 1965. Binns went on to establish Winnebago Australia in 1978 before a court decision forced a name change to Avida RV in early 2013.
Since the creation of the first Freeway camper with serial number ‘0001’, it’s believed the NSW manufacturer has produced in excess of 10,000 slide-ons, campervans and motorhomes under the Avida and Winnebago (Australia) brand names.
More recently, reduced demand for motorhomes lead to the manufacturer introducing its first new range of caravans in 35 years, with the release of the fibreglass-bodied Saphhire range.
In a nod to the past, it also recently re-introduced the Winnebago name on a premium 26ft Iveco-based motorhome sporting gold ‘50th anniversary’ badges.
According to Avida RV’s Facebook page, the company has only managed to discover the one exterior photo of the old Holden camper from its archives. However, it’s also keen to unearth other classic motorhomes from its colourful past.
“It would be great to see if some of our older vehicles are still travelling out there on the road,” the company said.
