Victoria’s Hitch-Ezy has just released a revised version of its locally manufactured 3.5 tonne off-road self-locking coupling designed to make single-handed uncoupling easier, while providing a simpler and more visual assurance that the coupling is locked on securely.
The new model now has its secondary locking button located at the back of the main sleeve. This lowers the coupling’s overall height for improved rear-door/ tailgate clearance and you can now padlock the dummy pillar inside the coupling for anti-theft security when it's disconnected.
There's a new ‘assistance tool’ that allows someone with a hand disability to still operate the coupling, while a stainless steel pin tethered to the tool holds the automatic locking mechanism in the release position for hands-free uncoupling.
Like its predecessor, the new coupling is made from billet aluminium to reduce weight. while retaining the same maximum ATM rating of 3.5 tonnes.
Hitch-Ezy also offers a five tonne rated forged steel body coupling for larger off-road caravans. The 5000kg model has a certified V-value, which is mandatory for towing above 3.5 tonne.
All Hitch-Ezy couplings hold a default ‘ready-to-engage’ status when disengaged. When the coupling is lowered onto the tow-pillar, the rotating lid automatically assumes the locked status, with secure locking-on also visually confirmed. If the locking mechanism is tampered with in your absence, it will automatically relock.
The V2 of the 3.5t Hitch-Ezy is sold online as a full kit including a stainless steel handbrake, its unique tow-pillar, an aluminium pillar cover, a dummy pillar to protect the heads from dust, a spacer for use with a WDH, an assistance tool and four mounting bolts, for $990 plus delivery.
Hitch-Ezy says the 3.5T V2 coupling is easy to fit, as its four-bolt pattern matches most drawbars. The stem of the thick tow-pillar is 7/8-inch, which is the same as that of a 50mm tow-ball.
