However, there are signs that demand for new caravans in particular is slowing with a notable drop in local RV production towards the end of last year, according to statistics released by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.
According to the industry body a total of 20,400 RVs were produced to the end of November, compared to 21,113 for the same period in 2015. Australian RV production year-to-date was down 3.4 per cent, or 713 units.
As in previous years towable RVs made up the majority, at 19,232 units, with non-towable or motorized RVs comprising 1168 units.
There was a significant slide in October with 1925 units built during that month – down 13.9 per cent year-on-year. Of this, 1807 towable RVs were produced – down 335 units, or 15.3 percent. However, the segment bounced back in November, with 1898 units built -- up six per cent.
Motorhome production continues to rise, with the 1168 units built to the end of November already surpassing the 2015 total of 1074.
Reflecting the changing tastes of consumers as well as increased demand for imported RVs, just 12 slide-ons and three A-Class motorhomes were built in Australia to the end of November -- and no fifth-wheelers according to the industry figures.
