Australia’s best beach named

A pristine stretch of sand off the Perth coastline has been named Australia’s best beach
The 101 Best Beaches website has picked Cossies Beach, on the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands as its top Aussie beach for 2017.
“Relatively unknown, Australia’s Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a collection of 27 curious oceanic dots in the vast deep blue, a four and a half hour flight from Perth off Western Australia,” explain the authors of the annual list.
'Cossies beach' was only recently named in honour of Australia's 26th Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and incorporates a “300m stretch of powder white sand (that) meets hypnotic emerald and turquoise hues”. The beach is so remote it's closer to Indonesia than its home territory.
“Think Tahiti, Bahamas and the Great Barrier Reef rolled into one destination.”
This year’s runner-up, Nudey Beach on Fitzroy Island was described as a “Queensland coastal gem”.
“The only thing stark-naked here is the absolute purity of nature where a lush 95 per cent rain-forested island meets near shore reef.”
While third place, and the best placed mainland beach was declared 'Moonee Beach' along Coffs Harbour, NSW.
“Utterly aquatic and coastal, this relatively undiscovered zone… has everything -- and then some. Camping, diving, surfing, canoeing, exploring in a Marine Sanctuary and Nature Reserve, it doesn't get much better.”
Rounding out the top-10 were Turquoise Bay on the Coral Coast of Western Australia, Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Adelaide’s Maslin Beach, Dolly Beach on Christmas Island, Shelly Beach on NSW’s Nambucca Coast, Boat Harbour Beach on Tasmania’s North West Coast and Apollo Bay along Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road.
The annual list is compiled by conservationist and surfer, Brad Farmer, along with author and ‘beach expert’ Professor Andrew Short OAM.
Described as “Australia’s authoritative guide to Australia’s 101 best beaches”, the authors claim to have considered 11,761 beaches and 8222 islands around Australia.
