The long-standing and well-respected Brisbane manufacturer of premium hard-floor camper trailers, Aussie Swag, has closed down.
The Brendale, Queensland based business, which had operated since 1985, appears to be the latest victim of cheaper imported campers that have flooded the local market over the past decade, and made it difficult for locally-based camper builders to compete.
Run by brothers Scott and James Fernance, Aussie Swag was one of the last of the premium, homegrown camper manufacturers, competing mostly in the niche $60,000-plus tent trailer market with its superbly-built Ultra D.
Unlike rivals like Rhinomax, Australan Off Road and Mountain Trail, Aussie Swag resisted the move away from high-priced canvas campers to solid wall hybrid campers and off-road caravans, offering a basic ‘one model’ line-up with pricing starting around $45,000.
More recently it modernized its award-winning Ultra D camper by incorporating composite construction and an auto-opening lid. It’s believed at least one of these composite campers used as a demo will be up for grabs at an auction next week of Aussie Swag’s remaining assets, which will also include a transport truck and various machinery and equipment.
Calls to Aussie Swag’s factory went unanswered, but Paul Khouri from Auctioneering Link Australia, which is conducting the ‘closing down’ sale, told Caravancampingsales that the company could no longer compete in the changing market and decided to “pull the plug”.
The auction will take place at Aussie Swag’s premises at 12 Deacon St, Brendale on February 15, with a public viewing on February 14 from 11am-3pm. Click here for further details.
