It’s official!
The life-sized replica of a vintage Aussie caravan made entirely out of inter-locking plastic bricks, that broke cover at this year’s Brisbane Caravan Supershow, has officially entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest LEGO caravan built.
The 2.2m high x 5.0m long LEGO van made from 288,630 Lego blocks, has out-bricked the previous record holder, a 2015-built replica of a smaller European caravan, which comprised 215,158 bricks.
Full-time LEGO builder Ben Craig, who calls himself The Brick Builder, started assembling the life-sized Lego van in his Gold Coast garage in March. It retains the original chassis from a 1973 Viscount Royal, with a 'minimalist' steel frame constructed to support the Lego bricks. About 70 litres of glue keeps the whole thing from falling apart.
The interior layout mimics the original (although interior height is a bit lower), and features a double bed, wardrobe, stove, sink with running water, refrigerator, dinette, other cupboards with sliding drawers and functioning lights just like the original factory-built caravan, but all constructed from individual LEGO bricks.
Around 20 LEGO enthusiasts from around Australia helped finish the project, which took 530-man hours over a 20 week period.
The Caravan Industry Association of Australia and Top Parks funded the project, which cost around $100,000. The caravan now weighs close to 700kg.
The LEGO van is currently on display at the Brisbane Holiday Village caravan park in the Brisbane suburb of Eight Miles Plains.
