Aussie-first wheel-less tent trailer revealed

New ride-on-air MyGlamper is a clever expandable camper small enough to tow through an underground city carpark

Expandable wheel-less camper trailers are nothing new, but an Aussie inventer has taken the concept to a whole new level with the new MyGlamper tow ball-mounted expandable family tent.

The innovative MyGlamper is the brainchild of engineer and adventurer Gene Corbett, who according to the MyGlamper website, came up with the design after being "frustrated by the limitations of traditional rooftop tents and bulky caravans, he set out to create a smarter, more practical system".

In travel mode, the compact module mounts behind the vehicle on the towbar using MyGlamper's patented hitch-pin system; a bit like some tow-ball mounted bike racks.

Arriving at camp, it's then a matter of unlatching and folding it out from the tow ball, to form a base floor on pull-out legs.

Another hinged hard section then folds over, similar to a rooftop tent, to form a larger base and release the attached, undercover, framed canvas living area and annexe.

Tow ball weights from 70kg

Three MyGlamper models are available, to cater for a range of budgets and vehicle types.

The MyGlamper Light is aimed at Suzuki Jimny owners and has a 70kg dry weight. The tent is made from a 2000GSM Oxford material and it comes with minimal features, including a double mattress and five core loom for the tail lights.

The MyGlamper Plus has a 90kg dry weight, and gets a few more upgrades like a 300GSM ripstop canvas tent material, queen air mattress, 30 litre water tank, hot water, kitchen with gas cooker and a Flatpack self-composting toilet.

While the range-topping MyGlamper Pro has a dry weight of 110kg, and is aimed at owners of heavy duty 4x4 and American pick-ups. Among its standard features are an automated set-up system, full-size inflatable annex, full electrics and a solar fascia.

All models sleep up six people and fold out to 2250mm high and 4500mm long, and up to 4450mm wide depending on the model.

The road ahead

'Early access' pricing starts at $18,990 for the MyGlamper Lite, up to $29,990 for the Pro version.

Options available depending on the model include solar and battery add-ons, storage, kitchen and a shower/ensuite.

MyGlamper says the units have been tested across thousands of kilometres in varied environments, and are backed by a five-year structural warranty, three-year canvas and air-tent system warranty, and 12-month fittings warranty.
