Aussie bound Chinese super caravan rolls in

One of the world's most advanced caravans could be available from your local dealer soon

A futuristic new caravan loaded with next-level design and technology features has broken cover in the US, and could be available at a local dealer near you soon...

Ambitious Chinese start-up Skydream RV first hit the scene last year but has now revealed a finished 'van to American media, with plans to roll out a production version later in the year after receiving $80 million yuan (AUD$16.5million) from investors in February.

Aussie Skydreams on the way

The cutting-edge Skydream caravan is the latest venture of Chongqing Innovation Technology Co, a Chinese smart energy and technology business that has been lining up overseas partners including the Melbourne-based JB (RV) Group.

Skydream said it will "officially enter the Australian market in 2026", according to a statement posted on the Skydream RV website in late-2025.

It went on to say that "the two companies will co-develop a new generation of intelligent caravans that meet Australian standards and achieve rapid market penetration through JB International’s strong distribution network".

What can Aussie buyers expect

So far, Skydream has only revealed a large tandem-axle super-luxury touring model, although it has plans for an off-road model that would probably appeal more to Aussie buyers.

The 8.5m long x 2.3m wide x 2.863m high, Space Camping travel trailer unveiled in the 'States weighs around 2900kg (Tare), and features a 'one touch' fold-out deck, picnic table and awning, to go with a one-touch 'movie mode' inside.

It also boasts a "world leading caravan skateboard chassis" with dual motors and twin LFP batteries (up to 85kWh), fed by up to 2200W rooftop solar. Then there's reverse EV charging functionality, so you can potentially use its battery system to run your home's appliances when it's parked in the driveway.

The Skydream also comes packed with RV industry-first tech like regenerative braking, traction and hill start assist and active steering assist -- all features adopted from the EV passenger car industry.

Other 'smart' caravan technology includes 'one-touch' hitching and unhitching, automatic valet parking, driving assistance and a sentry mode with panoramic safety monitoring while camping. Not to mention the latest 'smart home' technology, including a massive touchscreen inside.

The super-slick, ultra-modern layout includes a front bedroom, central kitchen and bathroom and a rear lounge/dinette that converts to another bed, with automatic blinds, a zero-gravity electric mattress, 'smart' cabinetry design, and a robotic vacuum cleaner among the highlights.

The road ahead

Skydream is saying its first Space Camping trailer will be available in North America in the coming months, with a 'rumoured' price tag of around US$150,000 (AUD$215,000).

The JB Group is remaining tight-lipped about Skydream's entry into the Australian market, with a spokesperson telling caravancampingsales there's been "no update" since the alliance was announced last year.

It's possible we might end up with an Australian-spec 'hybrid' version blending the skateboard chassis and other innovative tech with a less confronting 'big box' design more in favour with local buyers, but we'll have to wait and see...
