Anti-theft first for Aussie vans

Security features such as tracking devices, alarms and wheel locks have been available for years on caravans sold in the UK and Europe.

But now some of the technology has made its way to Australia with the imminent launch of a new, hi-tech anti-theft system for caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes.

Multi-national RV components supplier AL-KO, which has a production facility in Melbourne, says its new anti-theft system (ATS) includes a ‘next generation’ GPS tracking device in addition to NanoTag microdot technology to provide multi-level protection.

“Al-Ko has responded to recent reports that indicate that caravan theft is a significant and growing problem in Australia,” said Al-Ko Australia Marketing Services Manager, Brad Hooper.

“With their high value, caravans are prime targets for thieves and it is estimated that around 500 caravans are reported stolen each year in Australia.”

Developed in conjunction with Sydney-based Black Knight Global Tracking Systems, which sells similar, matchbox-sized devices for cars, bikes and other products, the GPS global tracking device utilises state of the art M2M (machine to machine) connectivity powered by the Vodafone network.

Al-Ko says that unlike other tracking devices that require a SIM card and a mobile phone plan with data limits, the in-built M2M connectivity chip provides almost instant global connectivity in over 200 countries with unlimited data, and no roaming charges or hidden fees.

With no removable SIM card, the 25g 'black box' cannot be re-used or re-tasked if stolen, and comes bundled with 12 months connectivity upon purchase.

Users can download and utilise a free app (available for iPhone or Android) to receive alerts or track their journey via their smartphone. There’s also an innovative “Geofence” feature that alerts the vehicle owner if it breaches a defined location radius.

Also part of the package is a NanoTag wand that allows you to covertly tag your caravan and belongings with microscopic dots.

Each wand has a unique six-digit alphanumeric Security Identification Code (SIC) which becomes your very own DNA “fingerprint” to help police identify assets

A new website has been launched to promote the product, and AL-KO is currently rolling out a national network of authorised dealers.

Pricing for the system as well as the on-going connection fee after 12 months, have not been announced, but like Al-Ko ESC the product should soon be available as an option on new caravans.
