Another big electric tow tug revealed

GMC Sierra EV four tonne towing machine debuts with 1064Nm and up to 640km range

General Motors has taken the wraps of its 2024 GMC Sierra EV pick-up truck, which blends an impressive 640km range with epic power and a four tonne plus tow rating.

Created to rival the Ford F-150 Lightning and the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck, the GMC Sierra EV comes powered with dual electric motors that, combined, produce a mighty 562kW of power and 1064Nm of torque.

With that amount of power (more than the 523kW supercharged RAM 1500 TRX), GMC claims the Sierra EV can launch to 60mph (0-97km/h) in just 4.5 seconds.

As far as towing goes, the GMC Sierra EV can haul up to 4309kg, although the rear bed's payload is only 590kg.

As with the Blue Oval's F-150 Lightning, GMC has developed the Sierra EV to act as a generator. It can provide up to 10.2kW of power via 10 outlets and is even capable of charging another pure-electric car. It also can power the typical American home for up to 21 days, says GM.

Crucially, thanks to GM latest's 800-volt architecture, the Sierra EV's battery can be charged at up to 350kW – a considerable increase of the 155kW rate at which the F-150 Lightning charges.

That translates into a truck that can add 160km of range in less than 10 minutes.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by a huge 16.8-inch portrait-style infotainment screen that is combined with an 11-inch instrument panel and a head-up display.

Boosting visibility for the driver is a 360-degree camera view provided by 14 cameras.

Fresh tech for the Sierra EV includes GM's semi-autonomous Super Cruise control system that offers hands-free driving on more than 700,000km of roads in the US and Canada.

Boosting agility, the Sierra EV gains the option of a four-wheel steering system that provides a tighter turning circle and even allows the truck to crab-walk off-road.

GMC EV Sierra is a battery pack on wheels!

Like the big F-150 Lightning, the all-electric GMC will only be available in dual-cab form.

From launch, GMC will offer a luxurious Denali Edition 1 trim that offers open-pore wood, aluminium and stainless-steel trim, plus a panoramic fixed glass roof.

Confirmed for an early 2024 release, the most expensive GMC Sierra Denali Edition 1 will be priced from $US108,695 ($A170,400) before state subsidies.

If that sounds a bit rich, GMC says that once the cheaper Elevation and AT4 trims are introduced the Sierra EV range will kick off from a more palatable $US50,000 ($A78,400).

There's no word on whether the GMC Sierra EV will ever be offered in Australia, but the success of the locally converted Chevrolet Silverado could lead to other US trucks being green lit Down Under.
