Toy hauler campers are not exactly new, but until now
most feature a dedicated section for the motorised toys, usually in front of or behind the main camper body.
However, a brand new model about to hit the market has been cleverly designed so that the heavy toys are stored on the roof of the folded-down camper, helping reduce its overall weight and size.
The brainchild of Sydney-based engineer and motorcyclist, Mark Nelson, the Ambush toy hauler prototype has a Tare weight of just 500kg and 750kg GTM, so it can be towed by smaller four-cylinder vehicles and doesn’t require electric trailer brakes.
It rides on a beam axle, leaf spring suspension, with its sleek profile achieved by the use of two aluminium extrusions for the chassis and frame, with fibreglass composite and aluminium along with canvas used for the main body.
With a loading height of just 700mm, it’s easy to roll on and secure up to three motorcycles, an ATV or even kayaks or mountain bikes using the rear ramps.
The roof tracks and fixing points can be customised to suit different needs and toy collections, with a cradle for a jet ski and a side-by-side also in the works.
The downside of this sleek design is reduced storage within the camper body itself, although there is an aluminium toolbox on the drawbar big enough to fit an optional, slide-out BBQ.
Another storage area has been created using an innovative air bed mattress, which takes around 35 seconds to inflate using a high-flow air pump. When deflated there’s enough space above to store camp chairs, bedding and other items.
Like an
increasing number of new campers
, the Ambush trailer features an electric, auto-opening mechanism for the rear-fold tent, setting up in a claimed 60 seconds.
Pricing should be around $30,000 depending on options fitted.
