AL-KO releases soft-roader suspension

New trailing arm suspension for bitumen tourers unveiled at Brisbane show
AL-KO is unveiling an even lighter, new new trailing arm suspension for on-road caravans and camper trailers at this week’s Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow.
Joining the off-road Outback and rough-road Cross Country set-ups in Al-Ko’s ever-expanding Enduro suspension range, the new Touring set-up is designed as an alternative to traditional leaf springs for touring vans and campers that stick mainly to the bitumen, with the occasional foray onto graded dirt roads.
AL-KO says the suspension’s “unique fabricated steel construction” makes it “significantly lighter than corresponding beam and leaf axle set-ups” and managing director Peter Mannfolk said it was created to meet consumer demand for a trailing arm suspension system for on-road vans.
“AL-KO beam axle and leaf spring suspension remains a reliable and effective solution, however there is also a clear demand for the comfort of independent trailing arm suspension from AL-KO in this segment,” he said.
“Manufacturers are also seeking a light weight suspension offering that does not sacrifice on strength."
He claimed the on-road suspension will be more efficient at absorbing road shocks, leading to "a much smoother towing experience for the driver and less stress on the caravan, better control as each wheel will rise and fall independently so the van is less disturbed by the undulations in the road, better tracking, and a reduced tendency for the wheels to skip”.
According to the Melbourne-based AL-KO, the Enduro Touring suspension is manufactured locally using Australian steel, Spanish-built shock absorbers and maintenance free, automotive grade bushes.
The new suspension was “subject to Al-KO’s extreme testing program” and comes with a three year warranty. It’s available for tandem axle ratings up to 3500kg ATM (3100kg GTM), and single axle rating to 2200kg ATM (200kg GTM).
