AL-KO Australia has broken new ground for motorhomes by offering four-wheel air suspension on its AMC chassis for Fiat Ducato-based models, whereas air suspension was previously available only on the rear axle.
The AL-KO Air Premium X4 system consists of four-wheel airbag suspension, with two airbags on each axle to ensure the vehicle remains at a constant height, independent of vehicle loading.
The system allows the front axle to be raised by up to 75mm and lowered by up to 65mm, while the rear axle can be raised by up to 50mm and lowered by up to 60mm, permitting the vehicle to be levelled automatically at the push of a button when parked on uneven ground.
The complete system is claimed to be maintenance-free and is fully integrated into the vehicle’s ECU. It also works on vehicles equipped with ESP electronic stability control.
The vehicle can also be lowered or raised at the press of a button on the system’s supplied remote control, even when travelling at speeds up to 25km/h.
This is particularly useful when boarding a ferry on a steep ramp, or negotiating or parking on steep driveways.
Importantly, the system automatically returns to its normal ride height once the vehicle reaches 25km/h
AL-KO’s new four-wheel air suspension is officially available on Jayco FA-25 and Trakkaway 700/770 models, however it can be optioned onto any motorhome with an AMC chassis, prior to build. It cannot be aftermarket fitted.
AL-KO was reluctant to quote a price for the system as it may be built into the cost of models from different manufacturers, however the company did say it could add around $12,000-$13,000 to the cost of a motorhome, depending on the brand and model.
