Changing tyres on the side of the road after an annoying puncture is a task few travellers relish.
But now there’s a product available in Australia designed to automatically reseal puncture holes while driving, potentially saving money, time and years of back ache.
The Air-Seal tyre sealant is a special liquid formula that is injected into the tyre through the valve, and then spreads evenly over the inside surface as the tyre rotates.
Immediately a puncture occurs, the air pressure in the tyre forces millions of Kevlar fibre particles and glycol fillers suspended in the sealant to interlock to form a plug which prevents any further air loss.
Air-Seal says the ‘plugging’ is a mechanical process, not a chemical reaction, and is completed within two or three revolutions of the wheel.
As well as the obvious benefits, Air-Seal claims the sealant increases tyre life by up to 20 per cent and also reduces fuel costs by maintaining correct tyre pressures.
Once inside the sealant lasts the life of the tyre, and can even be ‘sucked’ out and re-used in other tyres.
It’s available in two formulas: a standard ‘heavy duty’ formula designed to fix holes up to 15mm, and ‘Armour Seal’ for up to 30mm holes.
Available for RRP$60, a one litre bottle of Air-Seal should be enough to fill two, four-wheel drive tyres or four, standard passenger tyres. Twenty litre economy packs are also available.
