Long standing custom-built caravan manufacturer Evernew is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the industry this year with a new silver-liveried model based on its popular 900 Series van.
Combining many of the features most requested by customers, the 19ft 10in tandem axle van is immediately distinguished externally from its 900 Series brothers by its new shiny silver Camec aluminium cladding and matching centre door, black checker plate front and side protection, matching black alloy wheels shod with 265/75-16 General Grabber AT2 off-road tyres and new-design and extra large Camec double-glazed windows all round.
An off-road chassis with Cruisemaster coil spring independent suspension and two telescopic shock absorbers per wheel is also part of the package, although customers can also specify other types of independent, leaf spring and even airbag suspension depending on their intended usage.
Inside, the 50th Anniversary van is immediately recognisable as an Evernew with its solid timber furniture and cupboards, but has plenty of modern ‘fruit’ in the form of an Italian leather-clad café-style dinette, a top-spec Ibis roof-mounted reverse cycle air conditioner, a standard oven and microwave, and LED lighting inside and out.
There’s also a ceramic Thetford toilet bowl and a top loading washing machine in the rear ensuite that sits in its own tub with drainage to avoid an overflow damaging the tongue and groove timber panel flooring.
Even the entertainment system is premium, with a Pioneer iPod-capable head with four interior speakers and an LED 22-inch TV standard.
As with all Evernews, the 50th Anniversary model is over-engineered for a 30 year or more lifespan and includes such features as gusseted and over-plated chassis members in vulnerable areas, a 70mm fibreglass insulation-packed ceiling (compared with the industry norm of 42mm lining), glued and screwed overhead and bolted floor cupboards with roller-bearings in the drawer runners.
And like the 900 Series on which it's based, it has a very practical load capacity of close to one tonne -- or around double the usual for a standard tandem-axle van.
All this for a very reasonable ex-factory price of $76,000.
While the van is new, the company building it has stuck with its proven ways, under Managing Director Bruce Bailey, who founded the company with his father in 1963, while his son in law and former electronics engineer Darren French manages its day to day operations.
They still only sell direct from their Bell Street, Heidelberg yard in Melbourne, which helps keep prices down, and build strictly to order, a process that takes from four to six months from first consultation, depending on how busy the factory is.
At present Evernew is producing an average of around three units a week in sizes from 14ft to 35ft, in single, tandem and tri-axle format and in pop-top or caravan body configurations.
As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Evernew is also calling on its many loyal customers to send in photos and recollections of their first Evernew ‘experience’.
